Sergio Vega, formerly of Quicksand, stepped in on bass, and the album that resulted became the band's highest-charting record on the Billboard 200 since their 2003 self-titled album, reaching the top ten and drawing comparisons to the heavier, more direct sound of 1997's Around the Fur. Frontman Chino Moreno and guitarist Stephen Carpenter have described their creative relationship as one built on genuine friction, Carpenter noting that he and Moreno tend to answer the same questions in opposite ways, a dynamic both credit with giving the band's music its distinctive tension. Lead single "Sextape" went on to be certified platinum in the US, and the album remains one of the clearest points of rebirth in the band's catalogue following a genuinely difficult period.
