Perfect for readers who love Richard Osman's The Thursday Murder Club or M. C. Beaton's Agatha Raisin. About the Book: Date with Death introduces readers to Bruncliffe, a tight-knit Yorkshire Dales community where appearances can be deceiving. Samson O'Brien has just been dismissed from the police force under a cloud of suspicion, and returns to a village that has never forgotten his troubled past. He sets up a small detective agency above the office of local estate agent Delilah Metcalfe, whose own life is unravelling after a messy divorce. When a member of the village's dating agency turns up dead, followed by another apparent accident, Samson and Delilah investigate whether Bruncliffe has a killer targeting the lonely hearts club, uncovering old grudges and secrets residents would rather keep buried. Julia Chapman balances the darker threads with warmth, sharp dialogue, and real affection for rural Yorkshire life, creating an atmosphere that is cosy without feeling lightweight. The relationship between the two amateur sleuths, prickly, funny, and built on reluctant respect, anchors a mystery that keeps its twists coming to the final chapters. As the first book in a long-running series, it lays strong foundations for future instalments while working as a standalone introduction.
